Going forward I'll be moving in somewhat of a different direction with my technique. I've decided to add more textures to my cartoon illustrations. I've done this with some of my work in the past and have always liked it. So I've finally made the decision that most of my work from this point on will have textures incorporated. I really think it adds more depth to the piece. The clean lines of Illustrator are sometimes too clean. Sometimes the artwork needs to be "dirtier" looking to make it feel more authentic. I'm not discounting the work I've done in the past. I'm still proud of that work. I just think changing technique, and sometimes even style, is part of growing as an artist.
I love to manipulate lines when I draw. In fact, I obsess over my linework. To me, the life of the piece comes not only from the colors but the lines. My main focus for my surfer, Sonny, and the wave that surrounds him, was to create a sense of freedom through the flowing lines. Although this piece may seem quite simple, every line was put down with careful consideration.

Imagine how excited I was when I found out that, during a taping of That Metal Show
, Don Jamieson wore the heavy metal t-shirt I created pictured above. That's right! The show will air Saturday, May 12, at 11:00 p.m. I can't wait to watch it!
I was watching VH1 the other night and a promo came on during the commercials for the show's new season. While I was watching it I thought I saw Don Jamieson wearing a t-shirt with one of my illustrations on it in one of the clips. Naturally I got excited. But later I convinced myself that it couldn't have been the t-shirt I designed. The very next day I got an email from Don Jamieson telling me he wore the shirt during a taping of the show. He told me the date it would air and who the guests were for that episode. Man - I couldn't believe it. I am so siked to see that episode - a full hour of my heavy metal illustration on That Metal Show - HOLY COW!
That Metal Show is a great show about all things Heavy Metal - past and present. It's hosted by Don Jamieson, Eddie Trunk and Jim Florentine. New episodes are on every Saturday night on VH1 and then shown again throughout the week.
